Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economies has celebrated the Indonesian Village Tourism Awards 2023. Of course, Bali provided a number of winners.

As the country’s flagship tourism destination, Bali often paves the way for tourism trends around the country.

The Indonesian Village Tourism Awards were designed to help drive the tourism economy across the archipelago.

The competition has helped provide a platform for emerging tourism destinations across Indonesia’s 17,000 islands to share their customs, culture, heritage, and creativity to both domestic and international tourists.

The Indonesian Village Tourism Awards has done wonders for tourism in Bali. The competition has helped catapult destinations like Penglipuran Village to international fame, bringing in tourists and culture lovers from all over the world.

This in turn has helped spread tourism development a little more evenly around the Island of the Gods, something leaders have long been keen to see.

While Bali is a destination best known for its lavish resorts and luxury hotels, village tourism in all its forms remains a strong attraction for international tourists.

Whether it be day trips to explore rural waterfalls, afternoon adventures to learn about cultural heritage or early morning wanders through the rice fields, almost all tourists who visit Bali take part in a village-based tourism program in one way or another.

The Indonesian Village Tourism Awards is divided into five categories; Visitor Attractions, Homestays, Digital and Creative (Innovative Marketing), Souvenirs, and Tourism Village Insiutuins (Best Management).

This year over 4,500 villages from across Indonesia entered the competition and submitted lengthy details about each of their tourism programs.

Throughout 2023 the Minster for Tourism and Creative Economies, Sandiaga Uno, has visited many of these villages to see for himself the work communities have undertaken to promote and preserve their cultural and natural heritage.

In May this year, Minster Uno visited Serangan Tourism Village in Bali as part of the Indonesian Village Tourism Awards inspection tour. Minster Uno hailed Serangan Village as a memorable and Instagrammable experience.

The village is in fact a small island all of its own, connected to the main island of Bali via a short bridge.

Tourists can explore everything from culinary heritage to turtle conservation, immerse into the mangrove forest, and enjoy the village’s truly beautiful beaches.

During his visit, Minster Uno praised the community for creating a ‘world-class’ visitor experience.

He told the media “Serangan Tourism Village and generally tourist villages in Bali Province, the management is very advanced and very empowering for the community with a full approach, and they only need to facilitate.”

It seems that Serangan Tourism Village’s hard work has paid off as they won an impressive third place as the Best National Tourism Village in the county!

Speaking to the press after the awards ceremony the Head of Serangan Village, I Wayan Karma, shared “this award is a positive whip to continue trying and improving so that Serangan Tourism Village becomes a tourist destination that is capable of going global.”

It was not only Serangan Tourism Village that represented Bali at the Indonesian Village Tourism Awards 2023. Manistutu Tourism Village in Jembrana Regency in West Bali made it into the top ten of the best tourism villages in the souvenir category.

The village is an emerging tourism destination in West Bali and the award will go a long way in helping to boost the public profile of the area.

Union receiving the recognition from the Ministry of Tourism the Head of Manistutu Village told reporters “We, the people of Manistutu, in Balinese terms, are jengah [awakened]. We really want to advance our beloved village. With this recognition, hopefully, it will have a tremendous impact on the progress of Manistutu Village, especially the tourism sector.”

As can be seen, by the overwhelming success and fame the Indonesian Village Tourism Awards brought to Penglipuran Village in Bali, both Serangan Tourism Village and Manistutu Tourism Village can look forward to a healthy influx of visitors in the coming weeks, months, and years.

At the awards ceremony held in Jakarta, Minister Uno shared “We believe that the rise of Indonesian tourism starts from the villages. Because of the rich nature, noble traditions and culture, and the spirit of the people in the villages.”

Minster Uno hopes to see 6,000 villages entering the completion in 2024. He concluded “This event aims to be a leverage for the village economy and as a promotional vehicle to show the potential of tourist villages in Indonesia to domestic and foreign tourists. As well as encouraging regions to create new tourist villages.”

Serangan Village is also a small island linked by a bridge to mainland Bali. The area is famous for its marine tourism and oceanic conservation efforts. Both of these factors, combined with stunning landscapes and wonderfully welcoming locals, have put Serangan Village on the map.

During his official visit, the charismatic Minister Uno said, “The quality of this [destination] is world-class. I have traveled not only in Indonesia but also in other parts of the world.”

“Serangan Tourism Village and generally tourist villages in Bali Province, the management is very advanced and very empowering for the community with a full approach, and they only need to facilitate.”

High praise indeed. Minister Uno added, “What is very, very memorable and Instagramable as well as being fantastic is the procession of releasing the [turtle] hatchlings. And this is a symbol of sustainable development.”

Just like in Kuta, tourists are invited to take part in some of the exciting turtle conservation activities on Serangan Island.

Just a short 20-minute drive from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Serangan Island is the perfect vacation destination.

Not only does the island offer affordable guesthouse accommodation and breathtaking coastal views, but it’s just a stone’s throw from some of Bali’s most popular large-scale resorts, including Kuta and Sanur.

For those wanting access to Bali’s biggest resort areas but don’t fancy the hustle and bustle, Serangan Island is the perfect place to stay.

There is a wonderful range of locally run restaurants on Serangan Island, many showcasing some of the best seafood Bali has to offer. Even a cheeky Starbucks for those who need their fix!

Beach lovers and anyone with an interest in nature will feel right at home on Serangan Island. The calm and clear, azure waters of Serangan Beach are just magical, and a visit to the hidden Serangan Blue Lagoon is absolutely not to be missed.

Speaking to the press during Minister Uno’s visit, the Deputy Mayor of Denpasar, Arya Wibawa, also shared his love of this hidden gem.

“With all its beauty and potential, we hope that Serangan Tourism Village can be the best and become Indonesia’s Best Leading Tourism Village in 2023,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Wibawa was also singing the praises of Serangan Island. He highlighted how Serangan Tourism Village offers a great range of tourist attractions, including spiritual and cultural tourism.

There are a number of stunning Hindu temples, such as Sakenan Temple, Arrangement Wadon Temple, and Dalem Cemara Temple, in addition to the Assyuhada Mosque, that tourists can explore.

He also noted the numerous ways in which tourists can reconnect with nature during their visit. Perfect for marine lovers, tourists can take trips to go fishing, snorkeling, parasailing, and surfing.

Those with a real love of the natural world often share how much value they gained from a guided tour of the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre.

In fact, tourism in Serangan Island will be receiving a financial boost in the next few years. Leaders want to see the area grow into a destination that will hold its own with neighbors Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Tanjung Benoa.

Two ‘special economic zones’ will be established; the first will be the Bali Turtle Special Economic Zone, which will focus on bringing in tourists to the area who love all things coastal and oceanic (classic beach holiday lovers).

The Kura Kura Special Economic Zone will establish tourism infrastructure for tourists who want to explore the best of Bali culture in the south of the island.

Serangan Tourism Village, together with Manistutu Tourism Village in Jembrana Regency and Kenderan Tourism Village Gianyar, are the three tourist villages in Bali that have made it into the top 75 of the Indonesian Tourism Village Award for 2023.

In previous years the breathtakingly beautiful Penglipuran Village in Bangli Regency has been short-listed for the Indonesian Tourism Village Awards and remains one of the island’s most popular destinations for Instagram-inspired travelers and content creators.
